Chennai has no automatic “rain day”. A school holiday for Chennai district is declared by the Chennai District Collector, usually the previous evening once IMD has issued an orange or red warning, occasionally early the same morning. Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur decide separately, and colleges and offices are covered only if the order says so. We do not predict holidays; these are the pages where a real order appears:

If none of these shows an order, there is no holiday yet. Forwarded WhatsApp images are often fake or from an earlier year; a genuine order carries the Collector’s name and the date. The Collector’s own X handle could not be verified when we checked, so it is not linked.

Planned maintenance shutdowns are published a day ahead by TNPDCL, the distribution company formed from TANGEDCO (the old TANGEDCO site now redirects to it). Its outage page lists the date, the Chennai circle (Central, North, West, South I, South II), the substation and the streets and hours affected. Storm damage, a tree on a line or a blown fuse will not be on it; for those, call the support line.

The older 1912 number did not appear on the official pages we checked, so we do not list it. Pick your circle on the outage page, then look for your area name; nothing listed means nothing planned.

Gold. The reference rate is set by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA), which publishes opening and closing rates for 999, 995 and 916 (22-carat) gold and for silver every trading day. Chennai jewellers quote their own board rate a little above it; making charges and 3% GST are added at the counter, and the BIS HUID hallmark is mandatory. We do not republish numbers from third-party rate sites.

Petrol and diesel. Pump prices are revised by the oil marketing companies, Indian Oil, HPCL and BPCL, at 6 am each day, and every pump of one company in a city charges the same. Chennai’s price differs from Delhi’s because of Tamil Nadu VAT. The companies show the day’s city price on their own sites and apps (iocl.com, hindustanpetroleum.com, bharatpetroleum.in); their price pages did not open from outside India when we checked, so they are named here rather than linked.

Why no numbers? Rates change daily and the official sources do not offer a free feed we can show live. We would rather send you to the source than show a stale figure.
